From Marrakech, we set out for the Dadès Gorges. From the typical High Atlas Berber hamlet of Telouet,
we take a guided walk of the Kasbah of El Glaoui, former War Lord and Pasha of Marrakech, after
crossing the Tizi-n-Tichka Atlas pass (2260m) with expansive vistas across the mountains. The next stop is
the magnificent walled hamlet of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (ksour). After supper in
either Ait Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, we drive to Dadès Gorges, where we stay in a riad or guesthouse
for the night.
We leave Dadès Gorges for Merzouga in the morning after brunch. Along the route, you’ll find a number
of Berber communities. We’ll travel through Tinjdad, Jorf, and Erfoud, experiencing the first stirrings of
the Tafilalt Oasis in the Sahara, before reaching our final destination of Merzouga. After taking it easy for
a while, we head over to the camels that will transport us on an excursion into the desert dunes. We
pass the night in nomad shelters after climbing the tall hills to watch the sunset. We will be spending the
night in a fully furnished camp in the heart of the Sahara, complete with drumming entertainment,
providing the perfect setting for some breathtaking photography of the desert’s famous sunrises and
sunsets.
After getting up early to see the daybreak, we make our way back to Merzouga. The possibility to take a
refreshing shower and enjoy a delicious breakfast will be available to us. After that, we get back on the
road and head back to Ouarzazate. On the way, we stop at some Berber stores, where you can buy
mementos like fossils, carpets, lanterns, and leather, among other things. We are planning to arrive in
Ouarzazate in the afternoon, and then we will continue on to Marrakech from there.
